The pattern for this dress derives from Capitalist Vampire by Walter Crane and appeared in Justice (the organ of the Social Democratic Federation) on 22 August 1885. In the original image, the monstrous bat ‘Capitalism’, spreading the wings of ‘Party Politics’ and ‘Religious Hypocrisy’, feasts gleefully on the body of ‘Labour’. This word is emblazoned across the chest of the prone male figure exhausted by his toil, as Crane had not yet figured the redemptive body of Labour found in the pastoral vision of his later cartoons.
Likewise, the vampire is an ominous villain who would later be excised from Crane's imagery in favour of the figure who stands behind him: the angelic embodiment of Freedom, here carrying the torch of liberty and blowing the trumpet of Socialism.
