Peter Kennard’s Hiroshima Watch is a stark and unsettling photomontage that draws attention to the human cost of nuclear war. The image features a wristwatch, its hands frozen at 8:15 AM - the exact moment the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The watch is heavily damaged, its face cracked and its structure warped, evoking the intense heat and devastation caused by the explosion. This imagery references real-life artefacts recovered from Hiroshima, where timepieces were found fused to the remains of victims, forever marking the instant of catastrophe.
By isolating this singular object, Kennard amplifies the personal and collective trauma of nuclear warfare. The broken watch serves as a silent witness to mass destruction, symbolizing lives abruptly cut short and time itself being violently halted. The piece is a chilling reminder that the nuclear threat is not just a historical event but an ongoing danger. As with much of Kennard’s work, Hiroshima Watch compels the viewer to reflect on the consequences of war and the responsibility to prevent future atrocities.
